Uncrowded golden beaches, secluded coves and bays and picturesque fishing
villages. Add to that a region steeped in history and some of the best opportunities
for sport in Europe and you have an idea what the Western Algarve has to offer
holidaymakers who come back here to relive the experience time and again. It isn't only the astonishing landscape and the host of activities which make
this a unique corner of Europe it is the culture, the climate and the warmth
of its people who combine to bring you a magical experience on Europe's Atlantic
coast. Sun seekers, Golfers, History buffs and Gourmets with more than 3,000
hours of sunshine each year there is something for everyone here.
The Western Algarve is a world away from the commercialised resorts of the
Mediterranean but still boasts a climate to be enjoyed all year round and
enough to do to provide unrivalled opportunities to be as active or as relaxing
as you want to be.
Lagos is at the heart of the Western Algarve, steeped in history and has
long been a busy port inhabited since at least the Carthiginians and Greeks
sailed along this part of the Atlantic coast. Once an old slave-market town
Lagos has grown into a vibrant and popular location with a wide choice of
Restaurants and bars in the old town as well as a very modern Marina and promenade.
The world-renowned beach of Meia Praia stretching more than 3 miles is but
a few minutes drive from the town center whilst the magnificent Grotto rock
formations can be explored by way of one of the many boat trips available
from the harbour. Many people find Lagos the most likeable town on the Algarve
coast. Nowadays it is a youthful town with a refreshing, relaxed charm all
of its own spreading from Meia Praia to Porto do Mos on the West side of town
……… an easy place to while away a week or two and a good
base to use to explore the rest of the Western Algarve.
Luz is perfect for those who want a peaceful, low-key beach holiday without
all the razzamataz of the bigger resorts between Faro and Lagos. Once a small
fishing village, Luz has expanded over the years and appeals mostly to families
with young children and nature lovers who like space to roam but there is
still ample nightlife to entertain the young at heart. The village is located on the fringe of the Algarve’s main summer tourist
activity but are ideal if you have relaxation in mind. There is an abundance
of bars, restaurants and a number of shops to browse away an early evening
set in a sheltered bay with a good sandy beach.
